nope, it's not raining.

Shaun Roberts said...

That's because all Japanese people were in fact two dimensional until the early 19th century. This probably contributed to their invention of the kite, as the leading cause of death, pre3D, was strong gusts of wind blowing the people out to sea, and drowning.

Colin Patrickvrsnsmv SmqlivbPe said...

i owuld like to disagree as in western art we have a mix varying from very realistic to bat-sh*t insane in terms of representing reality, while japan... well... they failed kindergarten.

Has nobody notices what vainglorious tripe the themes in the European art seem to encapsulate ? Neo-Classisism/Romanticism was a disgusting period in European art. The Japanese guy's expression encapsulates my revulsion t this period nicely.

So according to you, being good at inception is being able to go as deep as possible? That's a very narrow-minded and ignorant view of inception.

Lilpanagos said...

I expect to see LOL and ROFLMAO but all i see is
"in my gay ass perception, the japanease one is actually amazing, but who the hell cares what i think anyways." oh, and the chain of comments like 1,000 comments long, that seems to get way less funny over time. in fact id say about the second copy of the comment is kinda funny, but not really.

Art is actually a very difficult term to define. The more I study art, the more the term becomes completely strange. Your opinion seems to reflect that of someone uneducated in art history. I believe your view of art in this manner is actually simply the view of one artistic movement. There have been many, many others.

Okonomiyaki said...

Anyone who tries to offer explanations clearly misses the point.

I live in Japan, majored in Japanese and minored in Art and Art history. I think this is hilarious.

Zoop55 said...

Very good point. Also Id like to point out, print from the 1700's ≠ oil painting from the 1700's. Pretty sure advanced lithography which brought added subtle tone variations and much more realism was not an option at the time due to Japans foreign policy of isolationism.

So according to you, being bad at understanding jokes and understanding that Japanese wood-block printing inspired numbers of English and French artists, who used the techniques in their own artistic endeavours, like the hand-painted wallpaper that is seen from a little after this time period. That Japanese artists that were amazingly talented at capturing texture and movement with as little detail as possible is being able to recapture reality as realistically as possible? That's a very detailed-minded and nonunderstandable view of jokes

guest said...

japan was isolated and was not influenced by any other countries for a long period of time. When the import ban was lifted Japan was actually a huge influence on art. Especially the Art Nouveau period. It is actually a very interesting happening in art history.

Upon reading Derek's comment, I have actually taken time to compile a list of art works (along with respective links to the works themselves) that are not realism and thus can be precisely recreated by a two year old:

Metamorphosis of Narcissus, Salvador Dali (surrealism)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/21/Metamorphosis_of_Narcissus.jpg

Composition VII, Wassily Kadinsky (abstract)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/49/Kandinsky_WWI.jpg

The Hungry Lion, Henri Rousseau (fauvism)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/25/Rousseau-Hungry-Lion.jpg

Relativity, MC Escher (surrealism, mathematical art)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a3/Escher%27s_Relativity.jpg

The Fate of the Animals, Franz Marc (expressionism)

Masako_yagi said...

Nonsense. Both are just different in it’s way of expression. Reproducing “reality” like the western art is a wonderful skill technically, but who says that’s the only real art? Thanks to “Japan, you suck at art”, we have become famous worldwide with our culture and art. Take “manga” for instance!! I invite everybody to take a moment and research a little bit more of the Japanese art, and you will realize that it is full of creativity, and what is posted on this page is merely an example of the seed that has grown the wonderful culture and minds we have today.

Ewenspoons said...

the Japanese one is an example of a woodblock print from the Tokugawa era, there were lots of different art forms from this time including painting. This is a portrait of a kabuki actor, it was supposed to look comical, it was the style of acting at the time to have distinctive facial expressions. If you want to see good woodblock prints from this time look at the artist Hokusai, he does some brilliant landscapes that can rival any European master.
Also, the mediums are totally different, so the comparison really isn't fair. If the European examples were woodblock as well instead of paintings I would understand.
