Restaurants had a tough year. That doesn’t mean, however, you owe the owners any sympathy for continuing to mistreat their employees. Sure, tipping is a regular practice in this country, but it’s still not required. You’re supposed to tip more for great service, less for poor service, or… you know… fight for a system where everyone gets paid a living wage and isn’t dependent on the kindness of strangers. At the very least, your boss should not shame customers about not paying you enough. That’s their fault. Thankfully, when a restaurant owner posted a flyer about tipping their underpaid staff, the internet was there to fire back.
The debate over minimum wage is a tricky one. On the one hand, it should be about $23 if we’re basing it on inflation and America’s GDP. On the other hand, companies want to protect their bottom line while exploiting their workers. Fun. It’s a fun debate we’re having. Honestly, I’m glad people are at least aware that paying anyone $5.50 is utter bullshit, however, I didn’t realize they were going to out themselves on a flyer for their business.
Let us now relish in the insanity that is this post.
Here’s how one restaurant decided to tell the world that they underpay their staff, and blamed, you guessed it, their customers:
1. Here’s the original sign in question:

2. One customer made a fine point.

3. The restaurant responded… poorly. People responded as nicely as they could.

4. It’s called a “minimum” for a reason. Doing the bare minimum doesn’t get you extra points.

5. This is the first time the comments section said something helpful.
